NATIONAL DAY

18 November is national day of Latvia celebrated every year as proclamation day of republic of Latvia. It is anniversary of independence of Latvia marked by people of Latvia council in 1918. After long struggles Latvia got independence on 18 November. On this day many events are celebrated which are conducted by people to show their happiness and great fullness. Torchlights, concerts and fireworks are a part of this celebration.

NATIONAL ANTHEM

God bless Latvia ( Dievs, svētī Latviju! ) is national anthem of Latvia. Its lyrics is written by Kārlis Baumanis ( 1835 – 1905 ). And its music is also composed by baumanis in 1873 but it is adopted in in 1920. Baumanis was a teacher by profession and also a member of Latvia nationalist movement. Basically the lyrics were originated from another song God Save the Queen that is sung in royal commonwealth realms. In 2014 the anthem tune was tuned with new F major version while its G major version is also present.

NATIONAL FLAG

National flag is been used by country during its independent days till 1918 after which in 1940 it is overruled by Soviet Union. Under this foreign rule Latvia was suppressed. On 1990 country regained its independence.

Flag was officially adopted in 1923. The flag contains red and white color and these colors symbolizes different meaning. The red color symbolizes blood of Latvians who are always ready to shed their blood to get independence and to fight with valor for their liberation.

There is also an alternate interpretation for red lines that a Latvian legend says that one Latvian leader wounded in battle and the corners of white sheet in which he was wrapped was red by blood of leader. The white color may represent the white sheet in which he was wrapped. The flag of Austria has same legendary story for its colors.

Proportion of colors is 2:3 for red and white respectively.


NATIONAL EMBLEM

Coats of arms were adopted by Latvian constitutional assembly by July 15 , 1921. And became use for national interest in 19 august 1921. It was created by new symbols and different signs. It contains symbols for national national hood and also symbols of historical importance.

Three golden stars above shield show three historical places of Latvia Vidzeme , Latgale and Kurzeme. The golden sun shown in blue fields’ shows freedom. Sun is also used for national identity and symbol of distinction majorly used by Latvian rifleman in Russian army. During World War I the sun was having 17 rays that depicted 17 inhabited areas of Latvia.


CAPITAL OF NATION

Riga is capital of Latvia and it is largest city of country. According to 2019 census it holds 632,614 citizens. It is a populous city having great hustle and bustle. It is third of Latvian population so it is also regarded as country’s primate city. City lies on gulf of Riga at the mouth of a river. Climate wise it is humid continental. January and February are its coldest months. Summers are mild and rainy. It is 307.17 km2


NATIONAL CURRENCY

Euro is the national currency of Latvia but until 1922 lats was national currency of Latvia but later it was changed. Ls is its abbreviation. It is further subdivided into 100 santīmi . 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 latu are most frequently used banknotes. 10, 20, 50 santīmu, 1, 2 lati are most frequently used ban coins in country. All bank notes are of almost same size 130 × 65 mm.


NATIONAL DRESS

The national dress of Latvia is sophisticated ,modest and charming. In beginning of nineteenth century , lien garments with woolen outwears made from house pun cloth were wore by Latvian men and women both. Men have traditional dress that includes a shirt with trousers, a coat as outwear, a belt or sash to held costume in place(usually, woven), socks, boots, and a hat on head.


NATIONAL COLOR

Carmine red is national color of Latvia. This color is also present in national flag and as per aw flag has red carmine striped with white color stripes in horizontal position. This color is sometimes also called as Latvian red. This red color is not pure bright red but a mixture of brown and purple giving dark red shade.

NATIONAL POET

Rainis is national poet of Latvia. Born in September 11, 1865 and died at September 12, 1929 at age of 64. He was not only a poet but also a Latvian politician , translator , playwright. His has done profound work on literature.


NATIONAL AIRLINE

Air Baltic is Latvian number one airline. Legally called as AS Air Baltic Corporation , is flag carrier airline. It was founded on 28 August 1995. Its head office in Riga international airport. Fleet size include 39 fleets. It is linked to 72 destinations. It has yearly and seasonally flights from Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius and land to many leisure spots in Europe.


NATIONAL MUSEUM

Latvian national museum of art is national museum of Latvia. It is rich in culture and has many collections of art. It has total 52000 art pieces that have historical significance representing the development of art in Baltic area and in Latvia. The museum is located in Riga and its building was designed by German architect and was built in 1905. Later it went into reconstruction that was completed in December 2015. It is open for public use and is a source for knowledge of historical monuments and arts.


NATIONAL LIBRARY

National library of Latvia is considered as cultural institution also called as castle of light. It is under the supervision of ministry of culture of Latvia. After independence of republic of Latvia this library was constructed in 1919. It consist of 8 buildings in city of Riga. It contains 4.1 million book stock and other publications. It has a staff of 480 people. This library acts a place that is source of information society that provides internet access to people and a source of knowledge and information.


NATIONAL STADIUM

Daugava National Stadium is located in Riga, Latvia. It was first open in 1927. It is a multifunctional stadium. Many athletics and football competitions are held in this stadium. Since 1992 it holds national importance and national games are being played here. Stadium is having capacity of 10,461 people. The surface of ground is grassy. It has a score beard. The stadium was renovated in 2017 – 2022.


NATIONAL GAME

Hockey is national game of Latvia. Also referred as ice hockey. It has a history through 1930s when hockey is played and loved by Latvian people. Later a national team is formed and every year many talented players play and have made it to most prominent hockey leagues even in hockey mecca. In 1936 this national team had made up to world national hockey championship. Latvian team stood out among other teams. Latvians are proud of their players.


NATIONAL RIVER

Daugava is national river of Latvia. It rises in Valdai Hills. It flows through Russia, passes Latvia and enters in gulf of Riga. Total length of river is found to be 1,020 km (630 miles) out of this total 325 km is present in Russia. River has 221 m of elevation.


NATIONAL MOUNTAIN

Gaising also called as Gaiziņkalns is considered as highest point of Latvia about 1,022 feet above sea level. There are many guesthouses build here . A tower was also constructed though before even its construction could be completed , it became a source of tourist attraction but later in December 2012 it was closed and tower was abolished because of risk factors.

NATIONAL PARK

There are four national parks of Latvia.

Gauja National Park lies in north east of Latvia. Established in 1973 and has a historical importance as has many historical structures.

Slītere National Park is second national park. Located in Talsi district on west coast of latvuia. It was established in 2000. It has area of 265 km². This park is known for its blue hills that are of thousands of years old.

Ķemeri National Park is located in west of country. Covering area of 381.6 km² and established in1997. Forests and mires majorly cover this park. It is famous for its medicinal muds and natural springs.

Rāzna National Park was established on 2007. Covering area of 532 km². Named after Lake Razna. Its purpose is to protect the biotopes present in lake.


NATIONAL ZOO

Riga zoo is national zoo of Latvia.it has total of 4000 animals that belong to 500 different species. Zoo was established in 1996 and has area of 135 hectors. It owns a membership with EAZA. This zoo is used as a purpose for scientific researches and conservation projects.


NATIONAL FOREST

Though Latvia has many forests and they cover 42 percent of land but no one is national forest. These all forests have various trees like Spruce, Oak, Ash , Birch, Aspen.


NATIONAL TREE

Oak and linden are national trees of Latvia. Linden is also called as lime tree. These both trees are characteristic features of landscaped of Latvia. They have special importance in the spiritual life of Latvia.


NATIONAL FLOWER

Daisy is national flower of Latvia also called as pipene. Botanically it is called as Chrysanthemum leucanthemum. These are wild grown flowers. Their growing season is July to September. These are waxy flowers having beautiful scent. It has gain popularity among Latvian people and in meetings and greeting this flower is given as a gift.


NATIONAL ANIMAL

There is no national animal but two spotted lady bird is national insect of Latvia and is carnivores beetle. It is common in western and Eastern Europe. It is commonly known as two-spot ladybird, two-spotted ladybug or two-spotted lady beetle. They feed on aphids and other beetles.

Sometimes national bird is regarded as national animal.


NATIONAL BIRD

White wagtail also called as Motacilla alba. It is passerine bird. It is slender bird. 16 – 19 cm in length. Having long wagging tail. Constant wagging tail is characteristic of its genus. This specie breeds in Asia, Africa and in Europe. This bird has 9 to 11 further subspecies. It is insectivores bird that feed on insects. It prefers open areas for feeing insects.

In Latvia this bird is kept as pet animal and also it’s used as a source of meat.

This bird is also mentioned in many Latvia folk songs.


NATIONAL FRUIT

There is no national fruit of Latvia.

NATIONAL VEGETABLE

Latvia is a country with ample vegetables that are grown on its land. But not a single one is given status of national vegetable however Rye or wheat, oats, peas, beets, cabbage and potatoes are grown in this land.


NATIONAL DISH

Grey Peas is national dish of Latvia and as it is Christian country so this food is served at their religious event of Christmas. They have their own point of view on this dish that this dish can bring luck and money to them. It’s made from dried peas , cooked with fried onion and smoked fatty bacon. It is served as side dish. It is served throughout Riga.


NATIONAL SWEET

Kliņģeris is national sweet of Latvia. The dough is given pretzel shape and served as sweet on many different occasions. It is enjoyed by people all over country.


NATIONAL DRINK

Riga Black Balsam is national drink of Latvia. It is mixture if eastern and western herbal alcoholic liquor so called traditional Latvian balsam. Black balsam is also used for medicine purposes. It is prepared using unique unique single-barrel infusion technology. It has 45% alcoholic volume and is pitch black in color.


NATIONAL HOLIDAYS

There are many national holidays that Latvian people enjoy. It includes new year’s day , good Friday , declaration of independence day, labors day, midsummer eve, national day , new year’s eve.


NATIONAL INCOME

Latvia is fourth poorest country and has 53.17 billion PPP dollars of gross national income according to 2017 census. Compared with European life it has 64% of quality life.
